Ian Smith

Ian Smith was Chair of King’s College Hospital from 2017 to 2019, one of the biggest NHS Trusts in the country with over 1,700 inpatient beds and nearly 13,000 employees. He was previously Chair of Four Seasons Health Care which owns and operates over 500 care homes and psychiatric hospitals in the UK.

For the three years up to 2012, Ian Smith worked in Palestine and Israel on the economic underpinning to the peace initiative driven by the ‘Quartet’ (the USA, Russia, the EU and the UN).

Ian Smith was CEO of Reed Elsevier, a FTSE40 publisher and information business. He went to Reed Elsevier from Taylor Woodrow where he was CEO. He was also CEO of General Healthcare Group which operated over 60 acute-care and psychiatric hospitals in the UK.

He worked for nearly ten years as a Divisional CEO at Exel which was the largest ‘pure play’ logistics company in the world. He went to Exel from Monitor Company, a strategy consulting firm where he worked for over 10 years, finishing as the CEO of Europe. This employment followed his completion of an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

He began his management career with the Royal Dutch/Shell group, working mostly in the Middle East.

He has an MA from Oxford University.
