Sir, Andrew Mitchell (Letters, October 27) suggests we should bolster the independence of the civil service and reduce ministerial direction. Combined with a fiercely independent Bank of England that would give us the bureaucrat’s dream – a perfectly technocratic system. It makes one wonder whether the next logical step is to do away with elections altogether. After all, what would be left for our elected representatives to do?
Isn’t democracy so tediously imperfect?
