Are any lasting solutions possible given the many different and conflicting interests within Northern Ireland, the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the European Union?

Is any negotiated settlement likely to be lasting, temporary, or a festering sore in UK/EU relations and among the political differences within Northern Ireland?

Can all sides of the debate find enough political imagination, creativity and flexibility to craft a political settlement, or will the issues remain stuck in the straitjacket of inflexible technocracy?

    The Speaker and a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Belfast from 1998 to 2004 and 1998 to 2003, respectively. He was the leader of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland from 1987 to 1998, and since 1996 has sat in the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat.
