Re-designing Capitalism: from stakeholder to stakeholder economy

Today, nobody who has thought about the question in any depth still defends Milton Friedman’s assertion that the sole role of business is to serve the interests of shareholders. Yet in the UK, US and elsewhere, shareholder capitalism still holds sway and is enshrined in law.

Ten years on, have we learned any lessons from the causes of the financial crash? Have policymakers done anything meaningful to reform the system? What options are available to turn our economies’ focus onto broader stakeholder interests.
